Cry Baby

No tears with timely bar fit-out

Cry Baby, the newest laneway bar in Adelaide’s West End, is a self-professed provider of good times, bad hangovers, and loud music – with a jukebox filled with rock’n’roll mayhem and a new architectural fit-out, there can be no crying over spilt beers.

The brief

Fast-tracked programme for new-look bar

Studio AKA created a classic American dive bar with iconic neon signage, plush velvet booths and a design full of memorabilia, knick-knacks, vintage art, and merchandise. PBS managed the site operations under a Managing Contractor procurement model. Like with many fit-outs, the main challenge was to complete the works quickly and within a tight budget.

Measurement and reporting

Our premier solution

The project included:

  • Fit-out of bar, toilets, cool room and service bar area
  • Ground concrete flooring with epoxy coating
  • Installation of tables and booths
  • Management of painting services

Tight budget and time frame

With a project value of $280,000 and a tight 9-week time frame for delivery, PBS managed to implement several changes in the scope without having to increase the budget.

Seamless coordination of key personnel

The bar’s laneway location with minimal access and parking created some logistical restraints, but thanks to multiple personnel management procedures implemented by PBS, the coordination and scheduling of trades and deliveries was smooth and seamless.

Safety and compliance first

As per our safety guidelines, PBS conducted a “Project Start-up” checklist and constant safety walks to ensure that the operation was carried out without any incidents. Compliance with Adelaide City Council requirements and with the Disabled Code for the newly created entrances was equally important.

The outcome: Project delivery on time and on budget

PBS was required to work closely and collaboratively with the project architects on scope, costing and constructability. Regular meetings with the architects and owners kept costs and schedules in check, and daily toolbox meetings with trades ensured a high level of quality with no reworks or delays. PBS managed costs carefully and preserved the tight budget, overseeing site operations to ensure that the bar was ready to open in just 9 weeks.

The PBS and AKA team worked closely with the Cry Baby owners to achieve their vision for the bar. This partnership produced a high-quality product that will endure the test of time. PBS’s eye for construction and incredible time management skills were key to the build outcome.
