Smooth transition for 8 special needs students

Sensory-conscious learning space

Completion 2 weeks ahead of schedule
MEETING A CRITICAL NEED: SPECIAL OPTIONS AT PARADISE PRIMARY
For Paradise Primary School, inclusivity is more than a buzzword — it's a commitment to their community. When the opportunity arose to establish a Special Options unit on campus, Principal Karyn Alford knew the temporary solution wasn't sustainable. The initial classroom space, with its abundant windows and high-traffic location, was creating daily challenges for both students and teachers.
"We had eight children in a space that wasn't ideal to start their schooling—a fully glassed room with no locks on the doors. We were continuously trying to keep students focused with constant distractions from passing classes," Karyn explains.
The school needed a purpose-built environment that would support their students' unique needs while providing a secure, peaceful learning space.

Special Options Unit
Total Building Cost: $200,000
Project Size: 90sqm
Project Type: Educational Facility Conversion
Timeline: 8-week delivery during school term
THE CHALLENGE: TRANSFORMING SPACES WHILE SUPPORTING LEARNING
The project demanded more than just a standard classroom renovation. PBS faced several key challenges:
- Converting an unused building that hadn't been occupied for nine years
- Creating a sensory-appropriate space with specific acoustic requirements
- Maintaining strict security and safety standards
- Completing the build during term time without disrupting school operations
- Meeting a tight deadline to enable student transition before term end
PBS’ APPROACH: EXPERT SOLUTIONS, MINIMAL DISRUPTION
PBS tackled the project with their signature blend of technical expertise and careful stakeholder management.
1. STRATEGIC PROJECT PLANNING
From day one, PBS demonstrated their experience in educational environments. They established clear work zones, implemented careful site management protocols, and maintained constant communication with school leadership. This meant construction could proceed efficiently without compromising school safety or operations.
2. TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE
Understanding the specific needs of Special Options students, PBS paid particular attention to acoustic treatments and sensory considerations. They installed specialised wall treatments to reduce noise, configured spaces to minimise distractions, and incorporated secure access points throughout the facility.
3. TRUST AND COMMUNICATION
"Their communication was outstanding," says Karyn. "We were informed of everything happening on site, even down to individual trades arriving. Their honesty and reliability meant I could trust them implicitly with site access and project management."
4. GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND
PBS's attention to detail extended beyond the build itself. They provided leftover acoustic materials for use in other areas of the school and consulted with staff about salvageable materials during demolition. This collaborative approach helped create additional value for the school while demonstrating PBS's commitment to partnership
"PBS showed complete understanding of our needs and exceeded our expectations. Their efficiency and trustworthiness made the entire process smooth, and the results speak for themselves. We've already recommended them for future educational projects."

THE RESULTS: A SPACE THAT WORKS
The transformation has had an immediate impact.
"The difference is remarkable," Karyn notes. "With the acoustic treatments, students don't hear external noise. Being at the end of the building, away from high-traffic areas, means fewer distractions. The students are noticeably more settled in their new environment."

WHY IT WORKED: PBS'S SUCCESS FACTORS
PBS's success on this project came down to four key factors:
Attention to Detail: Every element, from acoustic treatments to security features, was carefully considered and executed to create an optimal learning environment.
Educational Insight: Their understanding of school environments meant they could anticipate and address the specific needs of Special Options students while working within an active campus.
Proactive Management: From site security to trade coordination, their forward-thinking approach ensured smooth project delivery during term time.
Stakeholder Care: Their transparent communication and consideration for school operations built trust and confidence throughout the project.
