Sound Mitigation Works for Major Adelaide Healthcare Facility

Project cost: $1,500,000

Project size: 1600 sqm

Project type: Facilities upgrade

Timeline: 6 weeks

Meeting Healthcare Infrastructure Needs

In the sensitive environment of a palliative care clinic, peace and privacy are paramount. Premier Building Solutions (PBS) was contracted by Ventia, one of Australia and New Zealand’s largest essential service providers, to upgrade sound mitigation in the palliative care unit of a major Adelaide healthcare facility. The project showcased PBS's ability to work in occupied healthcare settings while delivering high-quality results.

The Challenge: Upgrading Without Disrupting Care

The project presented several unique challenges:

  • Working in a 1600sqm area of an occupied healthcare facility
  • Implementing complex sound mitigation measures
  • Removing and reinstating fixtures, fittings, and critical services
  • Maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and construction workers

Alan Wilson, Senior Project Manager at Ventia, noted, "Working in an active healthcare environment requires a special level of care and attention. We needed a team that could deliver quality work without compromising patient care."

Melissa Schwerdt, Nurse Unit Manager, also added: "Prior to the completion of the project, I was receiving frequent complaints regarding noise travel through the walls of patient rooms. This was obviously having a negative effect on vulnerable and private times for patients and their families during their End of Life journey."

The Transformation

The project resulted in significant improvements to the palliative care area:

  • Existing and new walls were soundproofed
  • New ceilings were installed
  • All surfaces, new and existing, were painted
  • Services were carefully removed and reinstated

These upgrades enhanced patient comfort and privacy, crucial factors in palliative care.

"The effect of the quiet and private space that was created for patient rooms has been profound. PBS staff were consistently respectful, helpful and proactive throughout both phases of the build."

Project Outcomes

The sound mitigation works delivered several key benefits:

  • Improved acoustic environment in the palliative care area
  • Enhanced patient comfort and privacy
  • Minimal disruption to ongoing healthcare services

Wilson commented on the project's success: "The upgrades have made a noticeable difference in the care environment. PBS managed to deliver these improvements with minimal impact on their day-to-day operations."

WHY IT WORKED: PBS'S SUCCESS FACTORS

Why it worked: PBS’s Winning Formula

This project highlights several key strengths that make PBS an ideal choice for healthcare construction:

  1. Experience in Occupied Sites: PBS has proven expertise in working on occupied healthcare sites, minimising disruption to critical services.
  2. Understanding of Requirements: The team demonstrated a deep understanding of the complex needs of healthcare facilities.
  3. Commitment to Safety: PBS maintained rigorous safety standards throughout the project, crucial in a healthcare environment.
  4. Quality Workmanship: The team delivered high-quality results in a sensitive environment, meeting all project specifications.

"We were very satisfied with their ability to adapt to the unique challenges of our environment. They delivered quality work while respecting the sensitive nature of our facility.
